UV Lamp Buying Guide

UV Lamp Buying Guide

What does a UV lamp do?

A UV lamp emits ultraviolet light that makes certain materials glow. This effect is used for blacklight parties, glow sports, decoration, inspection and creative applications. Choosing the right lamp depends on the size of the room, the purpose and the desired intensity.

Types of UV lamps

UV TL tubes

UV TL tubes provide even UV light distribution and are suitable for small to medium-sized rooms such as small stages, bedrooms or compact dance floors. They produce very little visible light and often operate at 365 nm, which creates strong contrast with fluorescent materials. Click here to view our TL Tubes

UV LED fixtures

LED UV fixtures are compact, powerful and energy-efficient. They are suitable for small, medium and large rooms, and are ideal for mobile setups. A 30‑watt LED can replace a 400‑watt traditional bulb, making LED the most efficient choice.Click here to view our UV LED fixtures

UV flashlights

UV flashlights provide focused light and are ideal for inspection, checking decorations, glow‑sport markings and illuminating small objects. Click here to view our flashlights

How many watts do you need?

Wattage determines the brightness and strength of the blacklight effect. LED, TL and traditional bulbs differ significantly in output, with LED being the most powerful per watt.

Small rooms (up to 20 m²)

  • 10–40 watts LED

  • 1–2 TL tubes

Medium rooms (20–60 m²)

  • 20–50 watts LED

  • 2–4 TL tubes

Large rooms (60–150 m²)

  • 50–150 watts LED

  • 5+ TL tubes

Very large rooms (sports halls, events)

  • 120–400 watts LED

  • Multiple floodlights placed strategically for even coverage

Best placement for UV lamps

For optimal results:

  • Mount lamps at least 2 metres high.

  • Use multiple light sources for even coverage.

  • Avoid pointing lamps directly at white walls, as they absorb light.

  • Keep the room as dark as possible for maximum effect.

Materials that glow best under UV light

Materials that react strongly to UV light include:

  • neon colours (yellow, green, orange, pink)

  • UV paint and UV tape

  • white clothing and textiles

  • glow‑in‑the‑dark materials

  • fluorescent decorations

Tips for a strong blacklight effect

  • Darken the room as much as possible.

  • Combine UV lamps with UV‑reactive decorations.

  • Use several lamps instead of one strong source.

  • Test materials beforehand to see which glow best.

Frequently asked questions

Does UV light work during the day? Only in darkened rooms. Daylight significantly reduces the effect.

Is UV light safe? UV‑A (365–395 nm) used in entertainment lighting is safe under normal use.

Does UV light have a colour temperature? No. UV lamps use wavelengths (usually 365 or 395 nm), not colour temperatures.

Which lamps are best for a living‑room party? Two LED bars with 6 or 9 LEDs provide lighting from two sides and create a better effect than a single lamp. Examples include the BUV63, BUV93 and the LED UV Bar 9×3 watt.
